A Wharton County Sheriff, Corporal Fiala, had the fright of his life last week when an eighteen wheeler nearly struck him as he attended the scene of an existing crash.
The night was dark and the road was slick as Corporal Fiala responded to the call for help just north of Highway 71, some 300 miles outside of Dallas, Tx. It comes as a surprise to no one that the first thing he did upon arriving on the scene was to run his lights, so passing vehicles would see that there was a hazard that they would need to steer clear of. However, the driver of an eighteen-wheeler hastily tried to rush around the scene as the officer approached the wreck, and narrowly missed the policeman before colliding with the existing wreck. In the video of the incident, which the police released to promote safe driving, the big rig appears to miss the officer by about a foot before crunching hard into the front driver’s side panel of the parked car, causing the very startled officer to step back suddenly from the point of impact.
Fortunately, no one appears to have been seriously hurt in the collision, which could have certainly proven fatal had the officer been struck by the commercial truck.
Any time there are flashing lights at the roadside it is absolutely vital to driving safely that drivers be on the lookout not only for debris or unmoving vehicles, but pedestrians who may be trying to help the injured or to manage the scene. It’s unclear at this time if the driver of the eighteen wheeler in the crash in question was driving while impaired or distracted, either of which would seriously jeopardize their ability to hold a commercial driver’s license, however, thankfully, there was no cost in human life for this reckless incident.
Anytime that you or a loved one has been involved in a crash with an 18 wheeler, it’s extremely important to seek medical attention immediately, because the mass of a large truck means that even at low speeds, they can cause extremely forceful, and therefore dangerous, impacts. Even if there are no open wounds, cuts, or abrasions there is a very real possibility of torn muscles, organ damage or internal bleeding which can be extremely dangerous, even deadly. After seeking medical attention, consider making an appointment for a free consultation with a personal injury attorney such as the team at AMS Law Group. They can discuss your situation and analyze the potential value for your case.
